    Can’t thank you enough, Jim.
As a VEN student and aspiring wine maker not living in the major wine regions , this podcast has provided so much information, inspiration and insight into winemaking and viticulture. I love the technique episodes and the discussions with winemakers who go into detail about their own techniques. It is incredible how many different styles and techniques their are in this field and all of them result in amazing wines. I began listening to certain episodes based on the titles but after a handful, I rolled back and started the series from podcast #1. I spend a lot of time each week in the car driving to the winery 3.5 hours away to work in my internship and this is my go to. In addition to the knowledge, I have discovers some GREAT wines I would have never found prior to listening to these winemakers. Funny thing, when interviewing with winemakers for my assignments and for internships, Jim Duane is a known name. Even for winemakers here in Arizona. Yes, we grow and make wine in Arizona. Please accept my praise and review as a huge thank you for doing this for us, Jim. Can’t thank you enough. Cheers!

    Super interesting
Just a fan of wine here and I really enjoy this podcast. It’s technical but still wine lovers can understand most of the conversations. Actually I feel like I’ve learned a bunch more.

    Chris Carpenter Fanboy?
Dude, this episode was awesome. I started listening while thinning Pinot Noir fruit at work, and just finished at home while making supper. Chris is someone I’d love to meet. Even work for. I was working this spring for my good friend grazing sheep under vines (a few of those vineyards mentioned in this episode) and was having a train wreck of a day with the sheep in Calistoga. A guy walked out of the winery and brought me a bottle of Mt Brave and said, “this is made by our winemaker Chris Carpenter. It looks like you’re having a rough day, and I wanted to give you this to cheer you up.” Not to sound cliche, but that was a pivotal moment in my life, and a second wave hit me when I opened the bottle. Dios mío! Some day I want to make wines of that caliber, although on a smaller scale (and also give them to people having rough days.) That kindness says a lot about the people there. I miss Napa and Sonoma and the wine-sheep-human interaction. Love your show, thanks for sharing!

    Episode 1: Matt Reid P.W.R
Episode 1: I started listening the podcast this week and I don’t like it, I LOVE IT! I really like Jim’s natural approach to this complex world of winemaking. Episode one was really cool. The lightning round of Q&A were really cool. I’m committed to catch up with this podcast as fast as I can. I found my new hobby!

    A fantastic podcast!
Jim does a really great job with his podcast. I’m a winemaker and learn something from each episode. Recently, I really enjoyed the Lang and Reed episode: funny, casual, and informative. Thanks, Jim!

    Amazing Winemaking Resource
As a wine student, this podcast is truly a gift! The breath, depth, and variety of content is stellar. Beyond theory, Jim’s podcast helps bring a healthy dose of reality of “why” winemakers make the choices they do. This is an invaluable tool for wine students and professionals alike. I have listened to several episodes more than once, and never get bored.

I love that this podcast is both technical and a joy to listen to. As a home winemaker aspiring to me more, this is exactly what I was looking for!

    Amazing Winemaking info
I was looking for something that not only gave me the guts of winemaking but how a winery actually runs. This podcast has been all that and more! It is interesting to hear the opinions of such a wide range of winemakers. Jim also steps out a bit and has given us a snippet of this such as cider making and how labs are run. I highly recommend this podcast!

How else do you get this kind of information?
Jim and his guests are a invaluable source of knowledge, much of which you’d be hard pressed to learn about elsewhere. It’s been very helpful to me in my journey to becoming a winemaker, and would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about how wine is made. Its also a lot of fun to listen to, particularly once you get some comfort with winemaking basics.

    A MUST listen!
Can’t begin to describe how useful this podcast has been in my journey into the vast world of winemaking. Great variety of topics, outstanding passion, serious yet light, Jim has created a instant and ongoing classic.

Amazing information if you’re passionate about winemaking
Amazing information and insight. So much knowledge. Absolutely love this podcast. If the interviews get overwhelming for someone as a home winemaker listening to all the UC Davis postgrads, checkout the episodes with David Grega and Robert Hunt. Matt Reid is awesome and PWR wines are great. Haven’t stumbled on an episode I don’t like yet.

    The best
This is the single best winemaking podcast on the planet if you want to learn how winemaking actually works.

    Informative and entertaining
What a fantastic listen. Great information in a very relaxed atmosphere. The episode with the father and son Dunn team is fantastic. And for the clown that left the poor rating and comment about the bad sound quality... it’s a podcast about wine making most of which were recorded at wineries with machinery in the background. So stick to bad vodka and mind your own business.

    Quality is BAD
All over the place with bad audio quality!

    Pretty good
Very interesting show for people in the industry... with the perfect earring or listening to it in a sound proof environment. I listen to podcasts in my car or in the street where there is a lot of noise and it is really hard to listen. You’d think after so many shows they’ll spend a few bucks on a proper sound system...

    Great content
Really enjoying this show. I just began with it a couple days back and find it really informative from a business, appreciation and science perspective. I would ask that the interviewer consider getting better quality microphones and bringing the audio levels up some. I found the audio to be faint and difficult to hear well without cranking the car stereo volume.

    Incredible
Thank you Jim, you’re ability to find some of the best in the field is incredible. You are doing a fantastic job. I listen to many other podcasts, when I see you come up with a new episode, I get excited. Thank you.

Great podcast to learn about the real world of wine making
This is a fabulous podcast for anyone interested in the craft of wine making and real insight into what really goes into making this magical beverage. This is the rare opportunity to listen in to some terrific wine makers sharing their approach, thoughts, beliefs and philosophy to winemaking which are as diverse and varied as there are grape varieties. Great mix of technical winemaking and background stories. Highly recommended.

    A must for aspiring winemakers!
I can’t thank Jim enough for the depth and diversity of enology and viticulture knowledge he provides in his podcast. On my own, it would take several years to amass this level of information which he delivers in a straight forward and often humorous manner. As an aspiring winemaker, I plan on listening to all podcasts at least a couple times. Thank you Jim!

    Great content and extremely informative
Jim does a masterful job with diverse content to help enthusiasts and winemakers hear all sides of the winemaking profession. He is honest and extracts great content from his guests for the listeners to enjoy. I’m always excited to see what winemaking arena Jim dives into next!

Head and shoulders better than any other
It’s not often you can find experienced winemakers openly talking about their specific practices and decision in winemaking. Most do not want their techniques copied or criticized. So any type of winemaking show out there is usually vague or for the beginner. Any shows not for the beginner will only touch on topics- never getting specific enough. This show is exactly what I craved yet couldn’t find. Detailed in practices. Chemistry. Vineyards. Entire episodes on so2, ph&TA, oak, corks—natural ferments ——Jim gets into the nitty gritty of all of it- unlike other typical snobbish winemakers— and I can’t get enough. Keep up the good work Jim. Go Zaga!

    Best wine related podcast
I am not in the wine business, but I am an avid consumer. I have been searching out and listening to as many Podcasts, wine related, that I can find for over 8 years. Jim has put together a program that is far above anything else out there. Informative, entertaining and understandable for the non-formally educated. The history of Napa shared by Jim and his guests are especially enjoyable. Keep it up Jim!
  • GigantorCPballin
    Best wine podcast available
By far the best podcast for wine out there. I have listened to every episode and have since been looking for something else to listen to. Most other stuff out there just doesn’t measure up. Keep up the good work and I can’t wait to here the next episode.

    Winemakers Delight!
If you are a winemaker, grower, or the kind of (wine) guy that likes to read technical manuals, this podcast is for you. Or if you want to learn more about what goes into making a great wine. Jim Duane (and his guests) delves into the chemistry and art of winemaking from the tank room to vineyard practices. I take notes on the second (or third) time I listen to some of the more technically driven podcasts. We have also changed some of our vineyard nutrition practices as a result of some of his podcasts. Well done, Jim!! Ps - I am donating $ on your website to help fund a better quality mic. I have trouble understanding the audio at times. Gordon Sorrells Four Labs Vineyard

Enology & viticulture class through podcasts
Always good info from coopers to corks. The viticulture stuff is fascinating. Bos, Buckland and the rest reveal so much more than what I get from a book.

An adventure into the winemaking industry.
I’m a home wine maker on the east coast and find the the interviews with all the people in the business fascinating and informative.
  • Middlewest Wino
    Wine nerd nirvana
Really interesting interviews with (mostly) Napa/Sonoma CA winemakers and other industry folks. Love the behind-the-scenes nature of chats and gives a "wine enthusiast" like me really fascinating insight into the biz. However, I have to deduct 1 star because the recording equipment makes it sound like Jim, and sometimes the guest, are sitting at the bottom of a well and it gets really hard to discern what they're saying without cranking the volume way louder than should be necessary.

Great inside look at wine making
A top-notch, wine-geeky, information filled podcast on wine making by Napa based winemaker Jim Duane. Worth the listen if you are interested in the craft and industry.
  • Peteryg78
    Best podcast for MW studying!
Great winemaking podcast that is technical enough to be relevant, but entertaining enough to keep interest. Amazing for studying for the Master of Wine program, papers 1-3. Helpful to have some knowledge of science / winemaking beforehand.
  • Seth Elgin

    Awesome podcast
As a newbie in the wine industry this podcast has been a great insight into how people got to where they are and what they are thinking in their winemaking and related industries. I love all the education and technical details as well as quality of people he gets on to interview. Highly recommended.

    Fantastic to hear different perspectives
The interviews are very informative and Jim does an excellent job of introducing guests and framing the dialogue! The different perspectives from different winemakers makes this podcast very valuable. The stories of each persons introduction and journey in the wine making craft are both insightful and instructive. Fantastic work by Jim Duane !
  • Pogue18
    Excellent Genre Podcast
Of the podcast series that focus on subcultural subjects, I have found that either the subject matter is too limited is scope; the host is not a good broadcaster or the host is not a good interviewer. Jim gets a star on all these points. Inside winemaking (through first 9 episodes) has touch life of wine from grower, winemaking, as a lifestyle choice, wine world vulture, restaurant usage, ect. As a lifelong wine fan, not of napa, but of ohio, i find this an excellent 'cast. Trying not to binge as i want it to last a while. Slainte'.

This podcast is fantastic for anyone interested in how to make wine. The podcast offers insights into the wine industry around Napa and the variety of philosophies and styles from the the top winemakers Jim knows. What a great find!!!
I'm a CPA serving the wine industry in Sonoma County, CA and went in search of a podcast from the winemaker's perspective...and what a great find! I would highly recommend this podcast for those interested in learning more about wine, from dirt to bottle. Or perhaps listen in while traveling through our beautiful counties tasting the wines. Cheers!

    Top notch!
Engaging and inspiring! Living in Portland, but a Bay Area native, at the close of each podcast I'm ready to hop on a plane in time for lunch with Jim and the guest of the show! Love to hear the back stories of the guests. I can feel the drive and inspiration that guided them in creating incredible wine. I appreciate the dedication and hard work of all involved. The smells of my childhood? Dry hillside grass, eucalyptus, dusty dirt, damp basements and sweet flowering trees. Thanks Jim!
