    Fantastic show
Hosts are so fun to listen to, they bring on some great guests and most of the episodes are just fantastic listens. There are a couple episodes that they miss the mark on; they’re not myths, misdeeds or the paranormal BUT overall recommend to everyone.

    Came for the history…
Stayed for the chemistry. Love their fun dynamic.❤️

    Usually good show
The knights Templar episode is disturbingly in factual and Eurocentric. Really disappointing

    Shameful and Disgusting
I have been a longtime subscriber and enjoyed many of their episodes, even though they at times get things wrong or clearly have at best just a superficial grasp of the subject matter. However their recent episode on Abraham Lincoln was so distasteful and horrendous I am unsubscribing. The way they laughed at this murder, the jolly way they giggled at how theatrically his killer got away, the entire thing - it was just sickening to listen to. They could not make it any more obvious how unsuited to the task they are of sharing historical experience with any meaning or compassion. This was an American tragedy, that has had a lasting negative impact on our society and the lives and happiness of millions of African Americans. Lincoln’s assassination changed the course of reconstruction, reunification, and led to the horrors of Jim Crow and the continued economic and social disenfranchisement of African Americans. If you have no respect for the gravity of history, you have no business doing a show on it!

    Charming hosts - good info
Good solid show - interesting subjects, well researched and lite on theatrics - check it out for sure

    Mostly Garbage
Thought I was getting into a cool paranormal version of history hit. Instead I found the amazing lengths a podcast will go to link any story to how awful the west is. Nothing but far left slop.

    Ph.d expertise
So many of these history podcasts are a waste of time and the information can’t be trusted. Both presenters have Ph.d’s and have guests of equal status. Great, great show.

    ???
Just started listening to the Murder that shocked Edwardian Britain. This episode was all over the place. I have no idea what’s going on. And you love history! Yeah, we got it.

    I Agree
Yes- sadly white nationalism is yet again playing out in America but it’s never gone away. Also, this is playing out widely in Europe eg Ireland (not diverse at all), UK, France and move in whatever direction. I’m a privileged white American male (related to Lincoln) and we are the a virus who has ruined the civilization with imperialism and colonialism, along with destroying the climate. The earth will be fine once the virus is gone. Education, communication and depoliticization is key to moving forward- accept our history. I’ve experienced so many cultures all over the world, all are prejudiced sadly. How we mostly originated from a region then spread throughout the world to become this in such a short amount of time is amazing. I don’t believe the human constructs like borders, money, time and so much more. All they do is divide, as we know of right are not natural anywhere in our universe. Religion has mostly destroyed rather than build, I can say this as a Theologian and MD (yes, I have 2 fields). Religion is built upon myth becoming a system of control. It’s had its time, it’s time for ur to go. I am not talking of spirituality but religion/cult, nothing but prejudiced angry bloodshed… Lastly, Lady Liberty says it best: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

    Love, love, love
“If you're not doing this to this, you're not doing history. So, I mean, you can take a seat and you can listen to the discussion or you can move on to something else that feeds into your narrative.” Thank you Anthony, from an American whose country is being heavily impacted by censorship, and a particularly fascist narrative, thank you.
  • PorkyWilliams
There are endless reasons to enjoy this podcast, but….
I have to say it’s this quote from the recent Virginia Dare episode addressing politicization of historical figures that perfectly captures why I keep coming back for more: “You can take a seat and you can listen to the discussion or you can move on to something else that feeds into your narrative.” *slow clap*

Maddy should be an ebook reader
My god she has a great reading voice. I love the podcast as a whole. But absolutely love when she is reading the most.

    Genuinely A Treat
This podcast is so wonderful to listen to! I always feel like I’ve learned something and I love the array of topics and time periods. It’s my first listen on the days that episodes drop!

Love the podcast, but it has been featuring right wing American political ads recently, which is a bummer. I realize the hosts are not responsible for these messages or share those views, just hoping this review gets some attention to the divisive advertising sneaking into the otherwise stellar programming

    Always fun!
Maddy and Anthony are a pleasure to listen to, and their stories are always interesting, entertaining, and educational. I especially enjoyed their presentations on the Easter Uprising, and I learned a lot. Keep it up!

    Jack the Ripper episodes
Not sure how you were reaching some of your conclusions on these episodes. Not sure that calling Jack the Ripper a “misogynist” really adds to the conversation. Not sure how a psychopath butchering women over 100 years ago relates to how horrible men are today. On behalf of all of the outstanding men in my life (who do not need to “do better”) I’m not listening to your podcast anymore.
  • ElaineMLL
    Great!
This podcast is fantastic! Not only is it well-researched, the information is always put into context and presented in a very relatable way. Maddy and Anthony’s rapport just makes it even better!

    Listen to this!!
I really adore this podcast. It's interesting, fun (as fun as dark history can be), and keeps me interested. I'm American so it's been extra fun to learn about more UK centric myths and folklore.

    LOVED the Easter Uprising eps
Excellent episodes about the Easter Uprising, please continue to do shows about the history of Irish independence and decolonization.

    Delightful, Dark and Disturbing
After Dark is a charming and engaging podcast that not only informs but entertains. If you are a person who enjoys and appreciates dark academia without wishing to be bogged down with the nonsense of those who take themselves too seriously, After Dark strikes a perfect balance. The hosts have a lovely rapport that appeals to both the cynic and the romantic. The guests thus far have been neither dull nor arrogant and the subject matter is diverse enough that it is highly unlikely anyone could accuse the show of being routine or monotonous in anyway. What’s more, the podcast is presented as such that one can skip episodes and focus on only those of personal interest if one should so choose. I have proudly listened since day one and anticipate listening to After Dark for a long time to come. Thank you for creating a wonderful way for me to be entertained and educated.

    Not funny
I find your humor off putting. I use podcasts to relax and for information. I find this annoying

    Love this
I found this podcast by chance, and after giving a listen to a few episodes, I’m hooked. The production is flawless, the hosts are pleasant and knowledgeable, despite the subject matter being at times gruesome, the choice of musical score is well selected, the sound over all is totally professional, and it’s all together fascinating, geared for those of us who crave well researched and well presented historic content. As one who produces true crime history podcasts, I’m very impressed. Bravo.

Good episodes. Insane amount of ads.
Good episodes. Insane amount of ads. But Absolutely worth the listen.

    Love the Black Death!
Keep making Black Death content, it’s my absolute favorite. Love this podcast
  • RDT1980
One good host and one vapid host
Anthony is brilliant and well researched. Maddy, an alleged historian, is obsessed with Outlander and The Tudors.

Fantastic historical perspective on Great Fire
I really enjoyed those 2 past series.

    Always Brilliant!
I have been a loyal listener for months now and I just love this podcast! The hosts are outstanding and I enjoy their banter. The topics are very interesting and educational while always being thoroughly entertaining. Keep up the excellent work 😊 Amy

    Just perfect
The hosts are brilliant but also have very pleasant voices that are nice to listen to. The audio quality is excellent except for the occasional guest with their own setup. The topics are always SO good, and the guests are always so impressive. It’s such a treat to listen to scholars who love what they do share their work excitedly.

    Murder is funny. Who knew?
Just discovered this and it sounded interesting. Started with the first episode. A few minutes in after a preview explaining that the episode was about 3 women murdered in Victorian London the female presenter found something funny. Laughter ensued, giggling and somehow the murder became funny. Sorry, not my idea of humor. The idea of one of them being nearly decapitated was apparently funny to the host. Not to me. Seriously suggest you stay away from this one.

    I.Love.This.Podcast!
This is a terrific podcast with hosts who have a great chemistry and, aside from their expertise, are terrific storytellers. For me, the stories help me to place the action - THANK YOU! And I love that you put the topic in context of what’s happening in the world at the same time. Thank you all for such an informative AND entertaining show.
  • nicknamenone09
    One of my favorite podcasts
The two hosts are smart and have interesting discussions. A good podcast about history and dark themes.

    Another History Hit hit show.
    Great chemistry and great presentation.
  • mlbudgie
    Excellent
The stories are captivating but the best thing about this podcast are the hosts. I enjoy their easy repartee and their voices are PERFECT for listening to.

    History made interesting
After being a day 1 listener, I feel this is the podcast if Trixie & Katya were to present the mysteries and the macabre of the past. Maddy and Anthony are like two friends on a phone call or out at brunch discussing topics. There’s always a joke or a sassy sidebar on each episode. Thought they may discuss serious topics at times, they never make it feel like a lecture. Another great history hit podcast
  • Inalein23
    Really interesting!
Super interesting, creative storytelling, and well researched. Sometimes Dr. Maddy can be a little moralistic. She’s always right, but it can feel performative.
  • Loki1981
    Amazing show
I love how history is presented. Though dealing with grim topics, the hosts don’t forget they are talking about real people who suffered. They bring humor to the show when appropriate. Overall, it’s a well thought out show hosted my historians who can be both informative and entertaining. They address the darker side of history without being ghoulish , instead presenting human stories.
  • CCCgraves
    Informative and Fun
I listen to a lot of history podcasts and have always looked for ones focused on the macabre but they tend to be too hokey or the hosts take things way too seriously. This podcast is neither and is the perfect mix of interesting historical facts and fun banter. The hosts have really great chemistry and the guests are always solid too. Also love how they tend to keep episodes around 40 minutes.
  • Jmmillett
Real history … of darker topics
I just listened to my first episode and was pleasantly surprised. This is real history with real historians! As informative and interesting as everything else from History Hit! I will be diving deeper into the back catalogue.

Great Podcast you don’t even know about
I stumbled on this podcast earlier this week and have been listening non-stop. Such a great find that blends history, facts, humor, and great guests for a truly entertaining experience.
  • ChucklingChicklet
    Great Content, But Biased
I will echo what many others have said: the topics are intriguing and well-researched. Would give it 5 stars weren’t not for the smugness of the hosts and their very 21st-century, often self-absorbed lens (complete with self-identifiers such as “recovering Catholics”). It might surprise them to learn that they have a broad audience with a variety of perspectives, and thus they would do well not to make assumptions. Perhaps they can extend their purported open-mindedness to all listeners.
  • dj snicksnack
    Great but not Superb
I really want to give this podcast five stars because the topics are fascinating and the hosts are well informed, but I have to give demerits for the fact that one of the hosts talks about herself and her own life way too much.
  • Minnesota Melinda
    Perfect Podcast
I absolutely love this podcast. They are perfect hosts and I learn so much. I could listen all day long. I never miss a show and I often listen multiple times while walking. It’s a perfect podcast.

    Have You No Mercy?
Have you no mercy for my TBR stack of books? I have added so many books associated with your episodes to my TBR. I will have reading material until at least 2550. Seriously, thank you so much for all the fascinating history!

    Great stuff

    Hosts with ego
I love the topics and History Hit is wonderful. However Maddie and Antony (the hosts) bring their ego to each episode. “I did this” or “I’m working that”, is sprinkled throughout many episodes and it’s a bit cringey. Overall, they’re not very objective storytellers and try to connect/insert themselves into every episode. A good comparison is Suzanna Lipscomb in Not Just the Tutors. She’s brilliant at telling the story without making it about her. Advice for Maddie and Antony, we know you’re smart and successful, so let your work talk for itself.
  • Rbico
    Excellent!
Great content presented by two friendly, relatable hosts with real professional knowledge they make accessible to the audience. Above all, great storytelling.
  • CMacLaren
    Engaging and entertaining!
This is my absolute favorite podcast! Every episode leaves me feeling like I’ve gotten an intimate peek into the lives of historical figures. As a scientist, I appreciate the rigorous research that goes into the stories, but what sets this show apart are the wonderful hosts and their gifts for storytelling and thoughtful analysis. Pick any episode and give it a listen-you’ll be hooked!
  • EssDoubleYou
    Excellence!!!
I can’t get enough of this podcast…I could listen for hours. Every episode is incredibly entertaining, informative and SO interesting! That’s not unnecessary filler chat that’s only between the hosts and I love that. They get right into the episodes, which are incredible!
  • Blyye
    A true find!
So entertaining and informative! I feel like I’ve been to my favorite history class in college, where I loved the prof and the work (and I wasn’t a history major!) This podcast engages my love of true and history. A true find!
