Grown, a podcast from The Moth

Arts #19

Grown is a podcast about the in-between: the nebulous, the liminal, the just plain weird time between those awkward teenage years and full-on adulthood. Grown is co-hosted by Aleeza Kazmi and Alfonso “Fonzo” Lacayo, two Moth storytellers and graduates of The Moth’s Education program who are on the cusp of adulthood themselves. Together, they guide listeners through true stories that deal with the challenges and joys of growing up. Using their unique points of view, Aleeza and Fonzo will discuss first crushes, culture, identity, secrets, and more.

Like The Moth Podcast, Grown centers these fresh, personal stories told at Moth events worldwide—but Grown also features conversations with the storytellers themselves, on the street interviews, audio diaries from young voices, and more. Grown is a podcast that reminds us that no matter how old we are, we’re never fully grown.

    Hosts Need Some Work
I love the Moth and Grown when they’re stories, but it’s so hard to listen to the hosts speak or even listen when there are panels of people speaking. I’m an “elder millennial” (apparently) and we invented the work “Like” in conversation (I’m joking) but it is SO excessive in the language on this podcast. I skipped the last episode where they had a panel of speakers because it was said WAY too much that it was distracting. The hosts need to practice improving their speaking skills so they use “like” and “you know what I’m saying” less frequently. Horrible habits. I realize they’re young adults, and good on them for having the courage to host a podcast in the first place, but they’ll be better off in life if they can kick these bad speech habits now.

    Love the show but..
Absolutely love The Moth & now Grown too but I wish the hosts would refrain from using the phrase “You know what I’m saying”. It gets to be annoying & I find myself wanting to skip through the hosts.

    Meh
I absolutely love the love the moth and, as a teacher, I was excited to hear about this spinoff. I wish the hosts talked like 99.9% less. It’s just … we want to hear the stories.

Best podcast in awhile, perhaps of all time
Many people are saying Grown is the #1 podcast in the world and they are right! A truly fresh and important take on the world from hosts with great chemistry, empathetic perspectives, and exceptional storytelling chops. The story selection is superb and really gives you a feel for the best the Moth has to offer. A great podcast for people of all ages, but especially for those still growing up and trying to figure out their way in the world (which, I would argue is all of us)
