Wilderness #209

On Woodside, Ben O'Brien seeks out the most important figures in the hunting world today to dig deep on conservation, politics, wildlife management, and everything in between. Through each conversation we discover different perspectives on hunting and begin to build a better collective vision of who we are and why we love these pursuits.

    Ugh
More of the same commercialized nonsense that’s ruining hunting.

    Ben is awesome
I originally found Ben when he had the Hunting Collective Podcast. I was sad when it ended, but now I found this podcast finally! I am glad to be listening to his podcasts and his guests again! I’m super stoked to dive in and see what subjects he touches on!

    Hit or Miss
First - knock off the booze - slurred words and thoughts are not good. Guests are hit or miss. Most recently listened to Tyler Sharp and he was pretty good. BIll Roden was also good - others have been unlistenable. Ben tends to talk a lot about how he’s going to piss someone off, but doesn’t ever make a salient point to do so. In the Tyler Sharp episode he got way over his head on African hunting. Sorry Ben, you can’t accuse people of being colonialist without a) knowing what the word means and b) giving an example. Hunters do not hunt Africa without the approval of the local government. That ends your colonialism comment. Anyway - I’ll pick and choose, but try to be specific about your ideas and not so elusive.

    Get Normal Drink Cups.
Great guests and great conversation. But for the love of God stop slurping out of ice filled yeti mugs into the microphones while recording an audio show. There’s a thing called a cough button.

    Milquetoast
Ben wants to engage in interesting discussions with those within and outside the hunting industry…on interesting topics…but it seems he doesn’t put in the research…and he doesn’t seem to know what he stands for as he waffles to and fro. So…what are we left with. Just another hunting podcast with guys peddling their wares.

    Art of conversation
I appreciate Ben’s ability to evolve in his thinking and change stances on things when presented new information . The tone between him and his guests show the art of conversation is not dead between two sides that disagree, and that is so refreshing.

    Finally!
Ben is back! Somehow I missed out on this announcement, but felt suddenly compelled today to look into where Ben had landed, and behold! Keep it up!

    Episode 35
Halfway through the episode and this guy is a joke. Onward….

    Never a dull conversation
If your an outdoorsman, or someone wanting to get more involved in the outdoors, you won’t find an episode of this podcast that isn’t entertaining. I learn at least one new thing after every episode.

    Do Better
The only thing more obnoxious and annoying than slurping whiskey and clanging ice on a podcast is when Ben gets drunk and starts slurring his words. Between that and the F-bomb every couple minutes….couldn’t even listen to that one. Sorry, but that was terrible. Message was totally lost.

    Ben is good for hunting
I’ve always enjoyed what Ben has to say. I love the fact that he will listen to both sides at any topic! Keep up the great work

    Great Host, Guests and Content
Ben does a great job with this show! Very well-produced with insight from leaders in the outdoor industry.

    This is awesome!
Talk about an edgy show that forces the listener to explore their own ideologies. With Ben and his guests you’re listening in on a conversation that brings to light deep learning, understanding and exploration of your ethics, values and motivations for engaging in various activities from hunting, gardening, fishing, buying veggie burgers, eating vegan, influencing legislation and everything in the middle.

    Both sides of the story
Great to have Ben back. Ben’s ability to present both sides of any hunting related topic is second to none. Just finished the Remi episode, it was like listening in on a couple of hunting buddies catching up. Looking forward to more. Greg Ray

    Interesting and Entertaining
Ben has a great perspective on outdoors and conservation. He introduces his thoughts on how he is raising his children up in the outdoors, while having incredibly important guests to discuss their perspectives and interests. Beyond thrilled that this podcast is here and Ben is back!
  • Bobby Contractor
    Glad your back!
I didn’t always agree with you, but I am glad that you would bring up points for folks to discuss. Discussion is the only way to make people see eye to eye. I used to look forward to every podcast. We missed you for the past few months, and I’m glad your back. I did, however like the perspective that Phil T Engineer brought to the show, and will miss that part of your show. Keep it up, ready to hear the next show.

    Ben is back!
Ben O’Brien is back! Great to hear his voice again! Anyone new should check out The Hunting Collective as well!

Thoughtful, just what we need right now
Ben always brings nuance and thoughtfulness to hunting conversations. He’s taught me a lot about disagreements and seeing the other side. The industry (and more) could learn a lot about the way he goes about his business!
  • Clay N
    Good voice for Conservation
With Ben at the helm there will be some quality content here guaranteed to educate.
  • The Ethical Sportsman
    Great Listen
Great to hear Ben’s voice in my speakers again. I can’t think of a better guest to have on the first episode of a conservation podcast than Randy Newburg either. In a world of “how to’s” and “big racks” it’s nice to listen to stripped down basics on the hows and whys of this great thing we get to do in the great outdoors. Rob D
