The Fourth Ambit

91

This cutting-edge science fiction drama unfolds as a futuristic detective story. Murder, blackmail, conspiracy - and it may all be orchestrated by an Artificial Intelligence. Years ahead of its time, The Fourth Ambit is still an exciting and thoughtful exploration of the future of technology. Gilles is doing research at a university when he stumbles onto some anomalies. His discoveries lead to a web of intrigue and danger he never envisioned – or wanted. Blackmailed into being a tracker, Gilles goes to work doing quasi-legal research for one of the corporations that run the Ambit. He soon discovers that the Ambit itself is but a shadow of a much more elaborate virtual world – The Second Ambit. Beneath that there is a Third, darker Ambit, which the corporations may not even control. And, if the rumors are true, a Fourth Ambit, built and controlled by a virulent AI. This nine-part science fiction radio play draws you into a detailed and fully immersive world of the near future. Ambitious story-telling, sophisticated effects and music, and extraordinary acting combine for an audio drama experience like nothing you've ever heard. Visit us at www.ambitgroup.com.

    All Time Favorite Podcast/Audio Drama
I have listened to this countless times in the many years since I found it. Dawson Nichols is such a phenomenal voice actor that I didn’t realize it was all voiced by one person the first time I listened and sometime I forget again. The audio production draws me in every time. The weaving of story elements and set-up for later plots is masterful and engaging. I love this story.

    Masterful Speculative Fiction
The concept sucked me in immediately, starting with near future tech, which progressively spiraled into more complex, abstract, and mind bending concepts. Possibly the most impressive feat of this story is how it makes complex subjects like computation, AI ethics, and definitions of consciousness easily accessible to the listener - it’s a fantastic philosophical primer for today’s world of connectivity and AI, all while being compelling and easy to listen to. It’s hard to believe this was produced 20 years ago by just one guy.

    Excellent show!!
I am so impressed by the quality of this show!! The story, the acting, the sound scape, the editing. All of it top notch. I can’t believe one guy did all the voices. I’ve heard too many audio drama podcasts where you can tell the actors are recording on their own and not actually talking to another human, then it gets edited together. Sounds totally unrealistic and I never buy it. With this show, even though it’s only the one guy playing all the roles, I still get the feeling actual conversations are happening. Totally pulls me in. Bravo!!

    Top notch sci-fi!
Really enjoyed listening to this - the story and characters are very compelling and like all great sci-fi, there are many thought-provoking moments that relate back to RL (real life). Highly recommend!

Best Sci Fi Writing In A While

    Five Stars!
I’ve been looking for new shows (I entirely thought this was a new show until I read the reviews of others) like this since listening to Wolf 359. It’s well produced, has a well acted script and story I can understand with a land I can see. And although I am only on the fourth episode I am thoroughly enjoying this. If the author or the companies that support these kind of creators still read these reviews; we need more sci fi, well produced shoes like this. Well done!

    This podcast absolutely rocks!
If you like The Matrix, Ready Player One, Neuromancer, or Snowcrash, you will LOVE this podcast. Probably one of my favs of all time now. Crazy that its 21 years old?!

    Jealous
I’m neither an author, podcaster, voice actor, nor sound designer, but every once I stumble upon a story I find so enjoyable that I wish I had the talent to pen (keyboard) something as well written (and, yes, every other aspect of this is great). Were there thumbs instead of stars, I would give this Homer Simpson’s highest rating: Eleven Thumbs Up.

    EXCELLENT
This is a very well produced piece of work. Dawson Nichols is a tremendous and creative talent. I was surprised to learn that it was created over 20yrs ago which made the story even more impressive. It’s ahead of its time while simultaneously grappling with moral, philosophical, metaphysical dilemmas as old as civilization…. Science vs religion…capitalism vs socialism…freedom vs subjugation…sacrifice vs opportunism…the consequences/pitfalls of technology(just because we can doesn’t mean we should)…the value and essence of life. It’s a shame I stumbled upon this great podcast. It really should be readily accessible. Well worth a listen.

    Riveting and immersive
I’m only a few episodes in and I appreciate all the effort in the voice-work and the the length of the episodes. The world building is really great.

One of the best Sci fi audio drama podcasts
I can’t believe this doesn’t have more ratings. I stumbled on a random Reddit post that recommended this. I found out this was created over 20 years ago and it blows away the production quality of many recent podcasts. This is by far my favorite podcast I have ever listened to - also why I took time to write this. If you are a Sci fi fan this is a MUST listen. Imagine a future where virtual reality has become the norm. Every step of the story kept me engaged with great character development and and overall amazing plot about AI and virtual realty. I actually listened to this twice in a row after being unable to find a podcast that lived up to it the first time. Even the second time through I was just as engaged each episode.

Captivating story and exceptionally talented reader
I listened to this podcast nearly all of the way through in one sitting. I got caught up in the adventures of the characters and the philosophical questions posed in the story. The way the reader changes voices for all of the characters truly makes the experience one of a kind. It brought me back to my childhood when my dad would read aloud to me the same way. The story is exciting, suspenseful, and eerily similar to problems faced by our society today. I only wish there were more episodes! I promise you will enjoy listening.

    A high water mark.

    A MUST LISTEN.
Despite being made in 2001, this audio drama is of an equal or higher quality than most modern dramas. This podcast deserves to be held in as high a regard as the most revered modern audio dramas. It took me far too long to come across this one...do yourselves a favor and check it out!

    Excellent and immersive
I found this podcast by accident while wandering down the rabbit hole. I'm SO glad I did! Immersive and complex, excellent sound design, interesting and well written story line. I was mostly happy with the voices, although having one person voice all the characters did get a little silly at times. Other than that (very) small quibble I loved this and will look for more by this creator!

    Interesting, well acted, different
I wasn’t hooked immediately as I thought it was going to be an adventure an episode and computers/AI are only mildly interesting to me. But then it developed into an overarching story line that was fascinating. I listen to lots of podcasts, and am tired of the smart mouthed young adult saving the day against forces of evil. This was much more nuanced, with natural sounding dialogue and a complex storyline. It also had a very satisfying ending. I think it will be worth a relisten at some point and will look for more from these creators.
